Power infrastructure for data centers: what a map can establish
PowerlandMap editorial team · Reviewed
Can a nearby substation prove that a data center can connect?
No. Proximity shows geographic context, not connection rights or spare capacity. Use generation, substation and line maps to identify the relevant network and questions. The network operator must confirm the connection point, capacity, works, conditions and delivery timetable.
Read each layer on its own terms
A generation record describes an asset or generating unit with a stated stage and capacity basis. A substation record identifies mapped infrastructure. A line segment describes part of a mapped route. None of these observations, on its own, measures power that a new data center can import.
PowerlandMap presents these layers alongside data center supply so a team can investigate the energy context of a location. Coverage is source-dependent. Multiple segments can represent one circuit, and several generation records can belong to the same physical plant.
Move from geographic context to a connection case
| Map observation | Useful next question | Evidence needed |
|---|---|---|
| A substation is nearby | Which operator and voltage level serve the site? | Operator identification and validated network information |
| A line crosses the area | Is a connection technically and procedurally possible? | Operator study and an identified connection solution |
| Generation is present | What is the supply arrangement and delivery path? | Grid connection and separately documented energy arrangements |
| A capacity figure is announced | Is it requested, reserved, contracted or energised? | Dated documents stating stage, rights and conditions |
Build a dated connection evidence register
Keep the requested capacity, electrical import capacity, site IT capacity and development phases in separate fields. Capture the issuing organisation, source date, relevant deadline, dependencies and the next decision required.
For a shortlisted site, request the applicable connection proposal, reinforcement scope, payment milestones and commissioning assumptions. Establish which party carries the works and programme obligations. Treat an indicative date as an assumption until the supporting conditions are understood. These are diligence questions, not a statement of any country's legal process.
Avoid turning regional indicators into site commitments
A country with substantial generation can still contain constrained locations. A renewable energy contract also needs to be considered separately from the physical grid connection. Regional context helps prioritise investigation but does not certify a site's deliverability.
When communicating a result, state the mapped evidence, the source coverage and the unresolved operator questions. PowerlandMap's methodology and coverage pages explain why mapped network records, generation capacity and IT capacity are reported as different measures.
Common questions
- Does mapped generation equal spare grid capacity?
- No. Generation capacity and network connection headroom are different measures. Site-specific capacity and timing require operator confirmation.
- Are mapped line counts the number of complete transmission circuits?
- No. PowerlandMap reports mapped line segments. Several segments may form part of the same route or circuit.
